Barcelona Immigration Office: what is done where
We are not the Immigration Office (Oficina de Extranjería). We're a private service, not a government office. Here you have the details of the Barcelona Immigration Office published by the Government Delegation (Delegación del Gobierno). And what is done where: the Office, the police stations, the Generalitat (the Catalan government) and your town hall.
Private service. We are not the authorities or a public body, and we don't sell appointments. We help you with your procedure; the decision always rests with the authorities.
In short
- Who it is for
- People who live in the province of Barcelona and do not know which authority to go to with their procedure
- Where
- Immigration Office (2 locations in Barcelona city), Policía Nacional (national police) stations, Generalitat de Catalunya and your town hall
- Deadline
- In general, the Office has 3 months to decide. They count from the date your application enters its register (additional provision 7 of the Regulation)
- Legislation
- RD 1155/2024, additional provision 7; Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia (Estatut d'Autonomia), art. 138.2
Where the Barcelona Immigration Office is
The Office is part of the Government Delegation in Catalonia (Delegación del Gobierno en Cataluña). It has two locations in Barcelona city, with the same phone number and the same opening hours.
- Location 1: Paseo Sant Joan, 189-193, 08037 Barcelona.
- Location 2: Calle Murcia, 42, 08027 Barcelona.
- Opening hours: Monday to Thursday, 9:00 to 17:30; Fridays, 9:00 to 14:00. From 16 June to 15 September, 9:00 to 14:00.
- Immigration Office phone: 935 201 410. According to its notice, it answers questions by phone on working days from 9:00 to 14:00. This is not our phone number: it is the Office’s.
To go in person you need an appointment. We explain how to book one in the guide how to book your immigration appointment in Barcelona yourself.
What is done where
At the Immigration Office
Residence authorisations are processed here. For example, according to the Office’s notice:
- Arraigo and other exceptional circumstances (form EX-10).
- Residence for family members of Spanish nationals (EX-24).
- Card for family members of EU (European Union) citizens, initial or renewal (EX-19).
- Family reunification, initial or renewal (EX-02).
- Renewal of residence and work as an employee (EX-03).
- Initial stay for studies (EX-00) and the art. 191 changes handled by the Office (EX-26).
Many of these applications can be submitted online through the Mercurio platform, with a digital certificate. The Office recommends it: you avoid travelling and you receive notifications sooner.
At Policía Nacional (national police) stations
Always with an appointment (cita previa). The Office’s notice lists, among others, these procedures:
- Fingerprinting, issue, duplicate and collection of the TIE (foreigner identity card).
- Renewal of the long-term residence card.
- Allocation of an NIE (foreigner identity number).
- EU citizen registration certificate. And the other procedures for people from the EU, the EEA (European Economic Area) and Switzerland.
- Letter of invitation, return authorisation and extension of a short stay.
- Certificate of residence or non-residence, registration certificate (cédula de inscripción) and travel document.
- Asylum and international protection.
In Barcelona city, the Provincial Immigration and Borders Brigade (Brigada Provincial de Extranjería y Fronteras) has four offices. This is how the police office finder describes them:
- Rambla Guipúscoa, 74: issue of the TIE to people from outside the EU. For people from the EU, registration certificates and NIEs for non-residents. Also return authorisations, with an appointment.
- Calle Mallorca, 213: handover of the TIE to people from outside the EU.
- Paseo Sant Joan, 189: NIEs for people from outside the EU who do not live in Spain, and residence certificates.
- Calle Guadalajara, 1-3: letters of invitation.
All four are open Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 14:00. Police stations in the rest of the province are on our page on immigration procedures in Barcelona and its province.
At the Generalitat de Catalunya
- Departament d’Empresa i Treball (business and labour). In Catalonia, the employment side belongs to the Generalitat (Statute of Autonomy, art. 138.2). Initial residence and work authorisations are submitted to it. So are two types of changes: from residence or a stay for studies to residence and work, and of residence and work. Information on 012.
- Departament de Drets Socials i Inclusió (social rights and inclusion). It issues the integration and housing suitability reports. You request them at your town hall. We explain this in the guide to the integration report in Catalonia.
At your town hall
- The padrón (your town hall’s register of residents): registration, certificates and renewal.
- Applications for the integration and housing reports.
- Municipal guidance services. In Barcelona, the Information and Arraigo Point (Punto de Información y Arraigo, PIA) answers questions about arraigo and the integration report. It is at Calle Tarragona, 141.
How to contact the Office
- Online: with the Immigration Offices’ online form, on the Public Administrations electronic office (sede electrónica).
- By phone: 935 201 410, on working days from 9:00 to 14:00.
- To find out how your application is going: see the guide to checking the status of your application.
What is specific to Catalonia
- Depending on the procedure, the application goes to the Office or to the Generalitat. An initial residence and work authorisation goes to the Generalitat. Arraigo or a family member authorisation goes to the Office.
- The integration and housing reports are issued by the Generalitat. The application is handed in, preferably, at the town hall where you are registered on the padrón.
- The Office does not publish processing times. The time limit is the legal one: 3 months from the date it enters its register (additional provision 7). No one can promise you a date.
Common mistakes
- Going without an appointment. Police stations only see people with an appointment, and the Office also gives appointments for submitting in person.
- Going to the Office for your card. Fingerprinting and TIE collection are done by the police, not at the Office.
- Taking an initial work authorisation to the Office. In Catalonia it is submitted to the Generalitat.
- Requesting the integration report far from your town hall. The Generalitat asks you to submit it, preferably, at the town hall where you are registered.
- Trusting websites or phone numbers that claim to be the Office. Use only the phone numbers and forms published by the Government Delegation. Appointments are not for sale.
Can we help you with the procedure?
We are not the Office and we do not speak for it. We are a private service: we review your documents, prepare your application and follow it up with you.
- For your first authorisation, see the types of arraigo.
- To bring your family, see family reunification.
- To renew, see residence renewal.
We work from Barcelona and online: find out about our immigration procedures service in Barcelona.
