Official name: Temporary residence authorisation for exceptional circumstances based on arraigo (Autorización de residencia temporal por circunstancias excepcionales por razones de arraigo)
Arraigo is a residence authorisation for foreign nationals who already live in Spain and have ties here. The word means “roots”. There are five types. Almost all of them require 2 continuous years in Spain; family arraigo does not. Here you can see which type fits you and which requirements they all share.

Each type has its own requirements. If you don't know which one is yours, take the test or tell us about your situation.

We mean permits for a stay or for residence in Spain.
Close family: partner, children, father or mother. EU: European Union. EEA: European Economic Area (the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway).
If you applied for international protection, the time your application was pending does not count for arraigo (art. 126.b).
Based on your answers, these routes could fit your case. For each one you'll see the requirements, the documents and the price breakdown.
From your answers we can't point you to a specific route. This is very common when there are doubts: tell us about your situation and a member of the team will give you guidance. The first guidance on WhatsApp is free.
For an appeal for reconsideration (recurso de reposición) you have 1 month from the day you are notified of the refusal (Ley 39/2015, art. 124). If more time has passed, tell us about your case and we'll look at what options are left.
A formal request for documents (requerimiento) is not appealed: you reply within the time limit it gives. If you like, we prepare the reply with you.
While your application for international protection is open, you cannot apply for an arraigo (art. 126.a), and that time does not count towards the 2 years (art. 126.b). We don't handle asylum: for that, we recommend a specialist organisation or a lawyer.
While you have a pending application, you cannot apply for an arraigo (art. 126.h). The usual approach is to wait for the reply and answer on time if you are asked for anything.
If you already have a permit or a pending application, arraigo is not your route (art. 126.h). If you're not sure, we help you check.
If your permit expired more than 3 months ago, you can no longer apply for a renewal or an extension. There are other routes, and we explain them to you.
With the permit from the extraordinary regularisation, you don't apply for a new arraigo. In the 2 months before it expires, you need to apply for the change to a residence and work permit (art. 191) or, if that isn't possible, the exceptional extension (additional provisions 20 and 21, section 10).
Your arraigo lasts 1 year. In the 2 months before it expires, you can apply for the extension (art. 132.3) or, if you have a job, the change to a residence and work permit (art. 191).
From what day can you apply? Work it out with the deadline tool
The renewal depends on whether your family member is Spanish or from another EU country: each case has its own rules.
The long-term residence permit does not expire, but the card (TIE) does need renewing: after 5 years, then every 5 years until you are 30, and every 10 years after that (arts. 178.1 and 185.1).
Each permit has its own rules for renewing or changing it. It's best for a member of the team to look at yours.
If you have finished higher education and don't have a job offer yet, there is also a residence permit to look for work or start a business project (art. 190.10).
Almost all types of arraigo require 2 continuous years in Spain (art. 126.b). If you don't have them yet, we can look with you at what options there are and what to prepare in the meantime.
Almost all types of arraigo require 2 continuous years in Spain (art. 126.b). If you don't know from when they count, we help you work it out. See the types of arraigo
All types of arraigo also have common requirements (art. 126): for example, not having another permit or another pending residence application. See the common requirements
This is general guidance: it does not replace a review of your case, and the decision always rests with the authorities.

You have the authorisation from the 2026 extraordinary regularisation and its year is ending: you do not apply for a new arraigo.
See: Extraordinary arraigoYou already have an arraigo and it expires in the next few months: what you need is the extension.
See: Arraigo extensionYour son, daughter or partner has Spanish nationality: your procedure is residence as a family member of a Spanish national.
See: Family of a Spanish nationalYou are a national of an EU or EEA country or Switzerland: you do not need arraigo.
See: EU registration certificateYour application for international protection (asylum) is still open: until there is a final decision, you cannot apply for arraigo (art. 126.a). We do not handle asylum: we recommend a specialised organisation or a lawyer.
It is a residence authorisation “for exceptional circumstances” (autorización de residencia por circunstancias excepcionales). You apply from inside Spain and without a visa (art. 130.1). The Immigration Office (Oficina de Extranjería) grants it if you meet the requirements and have ties to the place where you live (arts. 125 to 127).
With it you can live and work in Spain. The decision always belongs to the authorities.
For people who have lived in Spain for 2 years and have one or more job contracts adding up to at least 20 hours a week. Once your application is accepted for processing, you can work on a provisional basis. See socio-labour arraigo.
For people who have lived in Spain for 2 years and have close family with residence and financial means. If you do not have that family here, a favourable integration report is accepted instead. See social arraigo.
For people who have lived in Spain for 2 years and are studying or training: enrolment in a valid course or a commitment with the public employment service. It requires an integration report. It lets you work up to 30 hours a week. See socio-training arraigo.
For the mother, father or guardian of a child from another EU or EEA country or Switzerland. Also for people who support a family member with a disability who has that nationality. There is no minimum time in Spain and it lasts 5 years. See family arraigo.
For people who have lived in Spain for 2 years and, in the last 2 years, had a residence authorisation that was not renewed. It does not apply if that authorisation was an exceptional one, such as an arraigo. And the reason cannot be public order, public security or public health. See second-chance arraigo.
Not sure which one is yours? Take the guidance test.
The 2026 extraordinary regularisation closed on 30 June 2026. If you were granted that authorisation, you do not apply for a new arraigo. While you hold a valid authorisation, the rules do not allow it (art. 126.h).
Before its year ends, you need to change it to residence and work or, if that is not possible, extend it. We explain this in extraordinary arraigo.
When the year ends, depending on your case, you apply for the arraigo extension or move to residence and work with the article 191 change. Family arraigo lasts 5 years.
Be in Spain and not be an applicant for international protection when you apply or while your application is processed.

Only with socio-labour arraigo: once your application is accepted for processing, you can work as an employee on a provisional basis (art. 130.5). With the other types, you can work once the authorisation is granted (art. 131).
